Thoughts on the immigration issue…

Immigration has been a major issue in the headlines lately, and I figure I’d give my two cents. I’m not much of a liberal (if you could ever call me that), but I supposed I might be on the left when it comes to immigration.
We’ve been reading from the Old Testament, particularly the Law, and have noticed a lot of passages regarding “the alien” and how they should mostly be treated well just like the rest of the Israelite brethren. Now, I know we’re not ancient Israel, and that even if the United States were currently a “Christian” nation, not all of the Old Testament law would be required to be carried out, but we Christians in America can take some insight from the Old Testament as to the heart of God and how He would have us treat the alien. It is good to understand the heart of God and Christ from God’s revealed Word that from what “religious” Republican says.
First, we should be fighting for better living conditions for foreign workers. Unfortunately, we have an economy that thrives on unfair, cheap labor that undocumented workers provide. If these workers become documented, then we need to be prepared to pay more for groceries, more for any item that requires inexpensive manual labor. To simply close the borders and make undocumentation a felony is not only a poor solution, but I believe it runs counter to God’s heart for the less fortunate alien, who doesn’t have “rights” because of some piece of paper, but because, as God put it repeatedly in the Old Testament, “I am the LORD”.
Let’s give those poor Mexicans and Hispanics a break. Sure, let’s get them documented, but let’s also acknowledge that we need them because they are one of the large muscles that drive our economy and make up our nation. Let’s consider amnesty as an option, since many of us white folk have had it easy in America. Let’s get them in here legally, but make it a welcoming process, not scare people off who are only trying to make a better life for their family.
